CLUB SWAN 50

The ClubSwan 50 has many of the hallmarks for which Juan k is so well-known. She is a very current-looking, beamy yacht (4.2m) with chines, twin rudders, reverse sheer line and a dreadnought bow.

The square-top mainsail is sheeted to the very aft of the boat. The sailplan shows a vast foretriangle, one that should suit flying sails set from the fixed bowsprit (up to 296m2 downwind sail area).

The carbon mast is deck stepped and has three swept spreaders to negate the need for a fixed backstay. She will be built in carbon epoxy Sprint laminate to a lightweight displacement of 8.2 tonnes.

This project comes about from Nautor’s decision to do something special for the 50th anniversary. They organized an open competition of several designers and after a long and thorough process we were very lucky to be selected. The brief was to design a modern and fast boat that maintained Swan’s DNA and will race as OD but also capable of offshore sailing as well as short handed cruising. A very ambitious brief. I personally wanted to design a boat that retained all the comfort and style that Swan is capable of and at the same time be light enough to transmit a feeling, an emotion of sailing fast and efficiently which can only be achieved with a light displacement. Although not easy at the beginning, the yard made a tremendous job and achieved a very light boat just over 8T with a lot of righting moment. I’m very happy with the result, it is one of the best projects I’ve done.
